Ben,

It may surprise you to know that I don’t use an alarm clock. I’m serious. Haven’t for many years except in extreme circumstances, like a 6am flight or something. You see, my heart beats to the metronome of our mother earth, and I am never without clear bearings in dimension number four. So, doesn’t matter how drunk I get or how late I stay up, when I’m tired, I just go to bed. I will awake the next morning within ten minutes of 8 o’clock, or whatever other time I desire. Of course, it’s hard to shut off for the weekends, but not impossible. And really ain’t that tough to go back to sleep afterwards. So long as that guy in my neighborhood who yells “Stephanie!” over and over for twenty minutes isn’t around.

Still, I love clocks and watches. A lot. And I wonder why from time to time. I really don’t need them very much. I guess because gaging something in the fourth dimension is different than anything else. We have zero control over it, so it’s not like measuring speed or distance or location like that. It’s like a water wheel that isn’t allowed to touch the water, but still has to be accurate. Just, of all devices, there’s something about clocks. They’ve got nothing to hold on to.

In other news, I had a dream last night that I was walking in Center City and passed by a diner with a neon sign on the door that said “Willem Dafoe”. I went in and it was almost empty, but Willem Dafoe was running around being a goofball, then he’d return to his seat at the counter and write in a little book. He kept walking behind the diner and getting himself pie and coffee and the waitress would get frustrated. I got the sense that the diner wasn’t called Willem Dafoe. Rather, it seemed like he just started coming in all the time, and so they decided they’d drum up business by advertising that fact. The same way you’d have a neon sign that said, “Pabst Blue Ribbon” or “Breakfast”, they had one that said, “Willem Dafoe”.
